I grind at 18 when I do pour overs (mine has a permanent metal mesh filter), and there’s enough coffee dust to almost completely clog the filter. The Baratza Encore Coffee Grinder’s specially-designed conical burrs give a precise grind which enables a balanced extraction of flavours when making espresso or using popular manual brew methods such as pour-over, AeroPress and Chemex. The Encore’s range is more than sufficient for the average home coffee drinker and the budding enthusiast.

If you're on a tight budget, and you want all of that budget to go on build quality and performance, for manual brew methods, I think the Baratza Encore is quite a difficult grinder to beat. And how well does it handle a coarse grind (something that’s usually inconsistent in lesser-quality machines)? The C2 did well in our grind consistency tests, because it uses a custom-designed steel conical burr, rather than the ceramic burrs common in the Porlex and many other lower-cost manual grinders.

But with a stepless grinder, if you change the grind setting at all (for example, if you like to switch between coffee-brewing methods), it’s not easy to repeat the optimal settings for your daily brews. As we mentioned previously, barista Kyle Ramage says that you’re better off getting your coffee pre-ground with an excellent burr grinder than using a blade grinder or even a cheaper burr grinder every day.The electronic speed controller is adjustable from 405 to 495 RPM in the event that specific user conditions require modification of the speed. Baratza is a coffee grinder company—this is the only thing it does, unlike the majority of other companies whose electric grinders we tested. Most reviewers like to refer to the Encore as Baratza’s entry-level grinder, but we think that’s selling it short. The Encore has an accurate medium to coarse grind for the increasingly popular manual brew methods such as pour-over, Aeropress, Siphon and Chemex. While the Nevada or Sahara desert is probably a bit drier, if you live in Florida, it’s likely that you have a much different experience of static cling than we do here.

If you’re currently using a subpar grinder—especially a budget, blade-style grinder—our testing shows that by switching to a quality burr grinder, you’ll significantly improve the flavor of your coffee. Grinds Left in Grinder: To maximize freshness, the Encore minimises the ground coffee left in the grinder. The C2 is a tube-shaped grinder, only slightly wider and taller than the Porlex Mini—it’s 5 ¾ inches tall and weighs 1 pound. And they’re a great option for people who have a small, already-cluttered kitchen or those who generally make only a cup or two at a time.In comparison to the range of grinds produced by the OXO (previous slide), the Capresso’s range is much narrower. Additionally, the new and improved gearbox can prevent jams from stopping quickly enough without causing damage to internal parts, making for quite the resilient grinder. Kyle Ramage said he worries more about there being too many boulders than too many fines, partly because fines are inevitable as brittle beans are jostled or ground, and partly because he thinks boulders are what really muddy the flavor of the coffee. Its simple features and consistent grind will help you get a good start in the world of specialty coffee without hurting your wallet more than necessary. If you drink mostly drip or French press coffee, the OXO’s relatively even grind, wide range of settings, and more-convenient features make it a good alternative to the pricier Baratza Encore.

With better machines, you should see fewer fines and boulders and more grounds that are in your target range. While I concede that the physical labor of grinding some coffee beans is light when compared to, say, building the Egyptian pyramids, I’d rather not have to do that, especially first thing every morning. Calibration: An innovative burr calibration system ensures that each grinder has the full range of grind. You can skip the step of measuring your coffee and all that entails—the timer does that for you once you figure it out.Almost every part of the Baratza grinder is repairable or replaceable, which is rare among grinders designed for home use, and the company has detailed video guides for many fixes. Since the grinder works at a rather low RPM (only 550) and mostly handles grinds in the coarse to medium-range, you shouldn’t worry about lifespan.
