I enjoy it when Batman stories get back to his street level crime fighting with not superpowers involved. Deacon Blackfire explicitly speaks of using religion as a tool to garner power having previously unsuccessfully tried crime and politics. Art of the Crime • The Attack of the Annihilator • Batgirl of Burnside • Batgirl Rising • Batgirl: Wanted!

He’s so driven in his mission to the point that it’s a fault—which really comes to fruition with him as Red Hood—so this kind of tips a hat towards that in some ways. With their faith now shaken after seeing their leader beaten so badly, Blackfire’s former followers freak out and tear him apart. His mission is to purge humanity of those he deems undesirable — and in his warped mind, that's just about everyone.Regarding the citizens, I want to take a moment to shout out “Roving Reporter Ted Rogers,” who is the MVP of this story by constantly reporting Blackfire’s revolt from the front lines, even when they cut off Gotham from the rest of the world.

Nick: While I love that psychedelic color style, especially in the drugged sequences, I think it did sacrifice a bit of coherency for me during scenes that felt like they were supposed to be gritty and, well, a little more comprehensible. We will never knowingly harvest your data beyond the cookies needed for smooth running of the site, and wouldn't dream of passing it anywhere. I can’t say that they’re my favorite, but they’re so unexpected and striking, that they demand my attention… And I kind of think that’s what he was ultimately going for. Because of how this story is set up, you could potentially make the argument that this isn’t necessarily a Batman story, but a story with Batman in it. At the ends of the day, The Cult is a solid story and makes for a great edition to Starlin’s work on the character.Michael : Blackfire recruiting an army of downtrodden and homeless and turning them against the criminals that plague their lives is a great angle that I wish the story focused on more. I read this story a while ago for the first time, and I like it quite a bit, although this book definitely has its shortcomings. Josh: You could argue that it’s anarchy in the respect that there’s an absence of government, which there is, eventually. This eventually leads to him committing a murder in what proved to be controversial events among fans of the range. It was written by Jim Starlin, illustrated by Bernie Wrightson, colored by Bill Wray and edited by Denny O'Neil. Under instructions from Blackfire, Batman opens fire with a machine-gun upon a man he believes to be Two-Face but ultimately turns out not to be.Much like A Death in the Family never lives up to the potential suggested by its premise, The Cult feels more like an imitation than a masterpiece.

When next he wakes, he finds himself chained underground, held captive by a religious cult led by Deacon Joseph Blackfire, who in his religious fervor, is determined to clean up Gotham by eradicating the criminal element. You know that you’re about to get a thrill, when Jim Starlin is writing and even more if it’s something for DC, and even more and more if it’s about Batman.Blackfire tortures and drugs the Dark Knight and eventually succeeds in getting him to join his cult.
