Firstly you must find the wizard who will tell you to find some items, then you must take those items to kill the Big Bad. I have played it on the Kindle - and, after easily getting through most of the story, I am getting stomped by some fights at the end of the book that just seem to require a lot of luck to get through. In the Wizard "Series 2" edition, instead of rolling the stats for a character as per tradition in Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, the player has the option of choosing a pregenerated character from three choices (see "Further Notes" below for choices). When the book was republished by Wizard in 2002 a new cover was designed and illustrated by Martin McKenna. City of Thieves is a single-player role-playing gamebook written by Ian Livingstone, illustrated by Iain McCaig and originally published in 1983 by Puffin Books.

A tattoo… of a unicorn… on my face… Yeah, I strongly suspect that Nicodemus was just wanting to make sure I made a total fool of myself. So yeah - if the endgame had been a bit fairer and had required a bit more skill/luck/battling/dicerolls over just pure guesswork, I'd have been happier, and awarded an extra star. The book I received was the older version, and though not complaining about the quality of the book I received (it was in great shape),the actual product was not what was promised by the seller. City of Thieves is the second gamebook in the acclaimed Fighting Fantasy series that I decided to tackle. Unfortunately for all, Nicodemus lives in a wretched hive of scum and villainy, Port Blacksand – also known as the CITY OF THIEVES!

The book in general follows the original rules set down in The Warlock of Firetop Mountain (see Game System). Unfortunately, when we got to the tattooist we were ONE GOLD SHORT of affording the white unicorn in a yellow sun forehead tattoo we needed to carry forward.I’m fairly sure that the ball was a leaded weight, and it was actually an impressive feat of gladiatorial skill which set the body to its limits… but as far as I’m concerned, we were just playing volleyball, because I won with great ease and made some nice gold. If you have never experienced a Fighting Fantasy book before, expect a challenging adventure fraught with peril, puzzles and peculiar enemies at every turn. It is the 5th in the series in the original Puffin series ( ISBN 0-14-031645-0), 5th in the Wizard "Series 1" ( ISBN 1-84046-397-X) and 6th in "Series 2" ( ISBN 1-84831-113-3), and 2nd in the Scholastic series ( ISBN 1-40718-126-2). Loves the story and the die rolling for combat, the mapping out the path, so in the event of hitting dead end, easy to go back and start from a former decision point. The villains you face aren't too hard/numerous to defeat compared to some of the other books, and even if you get lost in some of the maze-like sections, the book will usually get you back to where you need to be.
