The handle, which can also help keep the lid in position when you need the box open, is super-strong and handy. At a camp site, it’s very common to have access to either 12V or 240V main electricity, either via an electric hookup or a leisure/car battery. Due to a cool box being an enclosed airproof container, the temperature will be higher than the outside on a warm day. When you take it off charge and head for the beach or field, the cooler can keep your items cool for up to two hours.

The cool box worked well and cooled down very quickly, and some reviewers mention it kept food frozen for 2 days. I am working with a glamping pod company and helping them to set up a family campsite in East Riding Yorkshire. Cooling the box from the mains at home and then moving it into the car with the 12 volt plug, a little indication light to show that there is electrical connection. If the cool box is not connected to power, it will remain cool for several hours, which is excellent if you cannot charge it whilst travelling. However, if you are trying to decide between a Silo, Tank, Hopper soft sided cooler bags or Tundra or Roadie hard coolers, check out our Size Chart built to help you understand which YETI large or small cooler is right for you. However, the IceQ states it is 20°C below ambient temperatures, which I have not noticed any difference. We’ve rounded up some of the best cool boxes for every scenario, from hard cases to soft designs that fold down completely flat. I half freeze a bottle of squash and this keeps everything cool then at the end of the day we have a cold drink too (and then the bag is lighter too). Value is subjective, but to YETI, it has always meant a superior product that will stand up to the demands of a life spent in the wild.

As mentioned previously, you can then disconnect the power so that the insulation is put to work and your food can remains frozen for several hours without using any more juice. But like any refrigeration (i know it is not a refrigerator), it needs to be left on and empty for 24 hours initially then it works very well. Thermoelectric coolers cannot be set to a particular temperature like on a conventional fridge – they just cool a certain amount, and it depends how high the fan is whirring as to how much cooling is performed. If it is non-wheeled, lacks a proper handle, and looks smaller in size, then it isn’t a portable box. If you need a proper cooker to do this though, be sure to check out our guide on camping stoves and kettles. People do, but really shouldn't, consider them as a 'fridge', because they cannot achieve and maintain the 0-5 degrees C (absolute temp) necessary for the safe storage of perishable foods.

Bottles can stand upright, and there is a moveable grid divider, so it is easy to separate bottles or items. We provide hints and tips about camping as well as reviews of the gear we’ve found useful over the years.

A passive cool box would be more suitable, plus there are no restrictions as you can take the cool box on days out. The most common used cool box in the UK is thermoelectrical due to the low outside ambient temperatures and cost.

Also remember that every time you open the cooler warm air gets in, and every time you put room temperature products (beer? It’s all down to the dense, extra-strong interwoven polypropylene cells within the walls that ‘locks in’ cool air (it also works the opposite way by keeping hot food warm too), and can collapse flat in seconds. For France we use a Waeco CF25 which works like regular fridge/freezer but is designed for portable use.

If it doesn't have a battery saver feature, it can kill a typical car/leisure battery stone dead in a few hours, they have no thermostat and just run flat out continuously!
