Description

If you like Greek reimaginings, complicated love-triangles, and stories following multiple, conflicting protagonists, you will really enjoy this novel.

If we're being honest, the only reason I reached the last page is because the rest of the club dropped the book and I was the last rat left standing. so like, apart from the already admittedly pretty bad optics of a British person positioning herself as an expert of some sort on Greek classical tradition (give back the fucking Elgin Marbles then, why don’t you! As I've written before it's intriguing, but there are many dei ex machina, so many convenient moments, put there to help the story going on.I am especially interested in Greek retellings at the moment and will be reading a lot of them over the next few months, so expect a lot more reviews to come! it’s just so indicative of the fact that this chick is brain-rotted from consuming primarily children’s content that she can’t conceptualise of a form of storytelling not easily mappable to modern television. Less than a page is dedicated to explaining Leto’s fraught relationship with her father and I kid you not it is a copy-paste of Katniss and her mother’s relationship minus a sister. yes ancient Greek sexuality and contemporary opinions thereof were ‘complicated,’ but not in the way someone whose favourite book is The Song of Achilles would understand. Unfortunately, during this time Athens is– again, quite famously– embroiled in the Peloponnesian War against Sparta.

Leto walks past a tapestry depicting Achilles’ death and yes, it does show him being shot with an arrow in the heel. it’s almost like Underwood doesn’t actually know anything about the cultural context of the time period!Gorgeous, tragic, and timeless, Underwood’s LIES WE SING TO THE SEA makes an age-old story feel new again. Gorgeous, tragic, and timeless, Underwood’s Lies We Sing to the Sea makes an age-old story feel new again. Achilles and Patroclus are quite famous, and Zeus and Ganymede, but lesbian and queer women relationships were not really ‘allowed. This could have been a book with ancient Greece aesthetics and mythology, that's ok I guess, but saying it is a re-telling of the Odyssey is claiming prestige when there is little to no work or interpretation behind it.
