It serves Ken to view life as made up of winners and losers, with concrete and tangible items making up the dividing line. Little Monsters” is set during the precise cultural moment when it seemed that a woman would soon be ensconced in the White House. Brodeur’s novel takes place on the Cape, centering on the Gardner family, who live there year-round. The only way to proceed is to steady your nerves, take a breath, and plunge into the depths, trusting that the darkness will hold you.

Exiting the pharmacy, white prescription bags tucked under his arm, Adam felt giddy at having outmaneuvered his odiously smug new doctor. Inspired by the archetypal story of Cain and Abel, Little Monsters is a kaleidoscopic, propulsive, and sophisticated drama exquisite with the tension of characters careening in and out of one another’s orbits, alternately sharing and withholding secrets from one another and themselves—and with Cape Cod’s magnificence and hidden corners elevating every page. With a terrific memoir and now a great work of fiction on my bookshelf, Adrienne Brodeur has a fan in me. The remaining painstakingly slow pages crescendo to Adam’s seventieth birthday party, and it is no surprise to the reader when all of the secrets have reared their ugly heads.Ken is a wealthy and successful businessman with a perfect family, and Abby is a bohemian artist living off a meager teaching salary and her brother’s goodwill. Newly the birth mother of Jonah, Steph wants to connect with the Gardner family, now that a recently revealed secret has come crashing to the fore, but how to best proceed? An overhead movement caught his attention, an osprey being driven over the tree line by a group of smaller birds. Get your claws into this fiendishly funny new picture book from David Walliams and Adam Stower – the sequel to Little Monsters! Everything else about the book is very different, but I couldn’t shake the comparison particularly considering that there’s a similar beach/ocean setting.

I recently read Lessons in Chemistryby Bonnie Garmus, which follows a protagonist who sees the world entirely through scientific terms. As his 70th birthday approaches in a few months both his children consider an appropriate gift for him. Trapped in his own cycling thoughts and emotions, he is oblivious to the family drama unfolding around him. I didn’t have anything against Brodeur—I’d never read or even heard of her before—and the book itself didn’t particularly strike me one way or the other. She “couldn’t pinpoint a date, but over the last few years, the distance between the three of them had turned into something more palpable, a liquid congealing into a solid.Abby and Ken used to be close when they were young but things happened between them…and now, there is a tension between them. Capitalism, the lingering grief over a mother lost too soon, and the family inheritance of mental- and physical health. I devoured Little Monsters and I believe it is going to be one of those rare books that both literary readers and escapist readers can equally enjoy.

Emily, the mother “Ken lost, and Abby never had,” died immediately after Abby’s birth, and looms like a shadow throughout the novel. She has a secret she is keeping from her family despite the fact that her life and that of Ken’s have always been deeply entwined. Tensions rise due to the increasing feeling of rivalry and competition for their fathers approval between the siblings, and climax when a third (half-) sibling enters the playing field with an urgent message to share. Having a baby has changed her concept of “family,” and she wants to explore whether to tell the Gardner family this news. We meet Adam Gardner, a brilliant oceanographer with an almost obsessive fascination with whales, counting down the summer months to his 70th birthday in September. Jenny is now conflicted over where to place her loyalty, and equally at odds over what she has become. The bohemian, single Abby is a “graduate of RISD, 1999” and had been “making art on Cape Cod ever since. I felt very sorry for him when the ogre told him he would never, EVER be a monster but this was the only sad part and it turned out very happy in the end.
