Of course, there's now the newer Samsung Galaxy S21 range - including the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, which zooms further than the Note 20 Ultra, and even supports the S Pen stylus. For the Note 20, Aura Red is exclusive to SK Telecom with 256 GB of storage, replacing Mystic Green in South Korea; Prism Blue will be sold in India. More serious artifacts are visible in close- and medium-range zoom shots, however, where the Note20 Ultra 5G can’t use only its dedicated tele-lens. For the most part, image quality on the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G is very good but it’s mainly fusion issues when zooming that prevent the device from ranking higher in the DXOMARK Camera database.

We also did observe slightly more noise on the Note20 Ultra 5G than we’re used to on Samsung devices. Pixel-peeping test scene images, slight luminance noise is visible in areas of uniform color in outdoor images, and while it’s not overly problematic, the best devices are noise-free in these areas.

Samsung was knocked off the top of our ultra-wide rankings recently by the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro (which offers the most all-encompassing field of view we’ve tested to date, along with excellent overall image quality), but the Note20 Ultra 5G pushes it close.

There’s also HDR10+ live image processing on video, stereo sound recording, as well as both gyroscope-enabled electronic image stabilization (gyro-EIS) and OIS. Dynamic range is quite limited using flash, though, so backgrounds tend to be noticeably underexposed.Independently assessed by Strategy Analytics in USA and UK in July, 2020 with pre-release versions of SM-N980, SM-N981, SM-N985, SM-N986 under default setting using LTE and 5G Sub6 networks (NOT tested under 5G mmWave network). Both use an AMOLED with HDR10+ support and "dynamic tone mapping" technology, marketed as Super AMOLED Plus for the Note 20 and Dynamic AMOLED 2X for the Note 20 Ultra. And when connected to a Wi-Fi AP, the built-in Wi-Fi Optimiser lets you connect fast with low latency to get your game on in real time. A few companies are even toying with 100W charging, but Samsung seems to be taking its time in rolling out truly fast charging.

Because 60Hz is harder to live with when we’re getting used to higher refresh rates, we kept the resolution at 1080p. Unlike the S20 series, the display will remain at 120 Hz regardless of the device's battery level, and can handle slightly higher temperatures before switching to 60 Hz. The triple camera setup provides lots of shooting options for smartphone photographers, but the implementation of a 120 mm-equivalent tele-lens has some implications for the quality of its zoom shots.

Mark was previously editor in chief of Laptop Mag, and his work has appeared in Wired, Popular Science and Inc. In addition, the S Pen now offers five new Anywhere actions, which build on the Air Actions from the Galaxy Note 10 series.

I watched over an hour of Umbrella Academy on Netflix, streamed Spotify with the screen on for an hour and a half and played about 40 minutes of Fortnite. I also like that the finish does a good job resisting fingerprints, unlike the Aura Glow finish on the Galaxy Note 10 Plus.If you're going to drop over a grand on a new smartphone, you might as well spend a couple of hundred more dollars or pounds and get the very best. The Note 20's telephoto sensor and the Note 20 Ultra's wide sensor use pixel binning to output higher quality images at a standard resolution, with the wide-angle sensor using Nonacell technology which groups 3x3 pixels to capture more light. One, the camera patch on the back is big and bulky, which not only reminds me of brass knuckles — it props up the entire phone. What’s different is that Samsung found ways to make the Note 20 Ultra design better, not necessarily bigger.
