Connections are surprisingly plentiful. HDMI connections tally at 4: one HDMI-out and three HDMI-ins all capable of 3D and 4K HDR passthrough, with support for HDCP 2.2 and CEC control. The HDMI-out is ARC connection and the port needed for connection to a TV. Now, while the soundbar has been labelled a “smart” one, it isn’t to the level of the Alexa-enabled Polk Command Bar. Any action you take will be directed through the Google Home app or Google Assistant on your mobile device. The Canton Smart 9 doesn’t have any built-in voice assistant – although you can pause and start music using vocal commands via Google Assistant on a mobile device. You can place TVs weighing up to 40kg on top, provided the stand fits well within the 545mm by 300mm surface area. If you have a TV over 50in, I’d recommend stepping up to the DM75 or DM100.

The DM 55 goes further still by offering a powerful and extended bass response. Twin, downward firing 100mm woofer cones give this sound base depth and high volume dynamics that even other soundbars and sound bases struggle to match. This sound base gives you the sort of powerful, dynamic sound that you'd usually only expect from a separate amp and speaker system. For even more bass, simply connect up a sub via the dedicated output. That said, the tendency to lean towards the low-end does mean that in action scenes dialogue can become lost in the commotion. I found the voice mode helped in pushing it forward, and I’d recommend switching it on from the get-go. Connections on the DM55 remain the same as before: you get two digital inputs (optical and coaxial), a pair of RCA analogue inputs, and a subwoofer output.

Another 'fix' was to go to the actual bluray player settings and set the Dolby Digital and DTS to 'downmix PCM' but from what I understand this converts the multi channel into a stereo channel which is less than ideal. This is an assured performer in terms of dynamics. The Canton Smart 9 steps up to the challenge of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, the loud smash of the train into Cobb’s car is both surprisingly loud and impactful, and the ensuing gunfight sees cars peppered with bullets and turned into twisted metal; the Smart 9 keeps up with the carnage with a great sense of poise, sharpness and clarity. However audio quality via Bluetooth streaming is remarkably good through the DM55. It’s a lot better than I was expecting and streaming Deezer from my iPhone sounded great. Conclusion As well as making your TV sound great, the Canton DM 55 also offers easy Bluetooth music streaming. Using the high quality apt-X Bluetooth codec, you can stream music from your smartphone, tablet or Bluetooth-equipped laptop or desktop computer. Stream your music library or use a music streaming service such as Spotify and enjoy a massive range of music in Canton quality.

Regarding running through the TV, I'm 99% sure that the optical out will only output 2 channel stereo regardless of the input from the bluray or other sources. From what I've researched for my TV (Panasonic TX50PST60 plazma), the optical out on the TV will only output 5.1 from an actual TV channel that is broadcasting 5.1 audio, all other output will be 2 channel. High-end style meets even higher quality sound for a listening experience that transforms your TV's sound.
