I am also in love with Noelle Sevenson's work with the amazing Lumberjanes comics. I recommend both of these pieces of art. They are filled with humor, acceptance and love. These are both graphic novel gems! But overall THIS WAS SO ENTERTAINING and fun and just absolutely fantastic. Nimona’s character was the highlight of the book for me.So I think it really is about this almost, like, radical acceptance of seeing someone not necessarily for all that they are - with a character like Nimona, who is almost impossible to know every part of her, but telling them that you will be there for them. It means the world to me specifically when someone is willing to do that. And I really hope that this movie leads to those conversations. But also, it's just, like, a really fun movie. I hope that's coming across. It has so much love in it and so much heart and it's just a really, really great time. She is the result of an experiment gone wrong (or possibly right), and then either breaks free or is released.

It was very emotional to me to be able to see her come to life, and to see her this way and be like, That’s her. That’s Nimona. That’s this character who got me through so many hard times as a young person,” Stevenson said. “It was such a power fantasy for me. And I think for lots of kids, they’ll feel the same way. She can’t be confined. She can’t be constrained to any form. […] So I’m really, really excited for kids to be able to see themselves in that power fantasy.”

Netflix's Nimona is mostly a standard kids' movie and it borrows a lot of its story beats and plot points from a broad children's film lexicon. From its exposition-heavy narration at the start to its uplifting Iron Giant-inspired ending, the animated Nimona is clearly aimed at a juvenile audience. However, it includes several unusual elements for a children's film, including a loving homosexual romance and suicidal ideation. It's using conventional writing and imagery to push its narrative's envelope in some important ways. Their main mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are. At a press day leading up to Nimona’s release, writer-artist ND Stevenson explained that all those changes felt necessary, but that none of them mattered as much as preserving the title character as she was originally written.

Animal shapeshifting: Nimona can shapeshift into any creature that has existed in some point in time. This includes dragons, dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, and various monsters. She cannot shapeshift into made-up animals. Stevenson’s insistence that Nimona remain recognizable in the movie extended to aspects of her character design, color scheme, and movement. “One of the things that was really important to me was her body type,” he said. “She’s chubby and she’s curvy, but she’s never sexualized, and she’s gender-nonconforming. She just has her own unique style. She chooses to look this way. And so that was something I just really wanted to make sure — no matter how much [the story] might change in the adaption, that that was something that stayed true.” Partial transformation/power usage: Nimona can alter her human form to exhibit non-human abilities. An example of this is suddenly having huge arms, [18] breathing fire, [19] or being able to shoot spikes. So I’ve heard great things about this graphic novel, but the one that really got my attention was Rainbow Rowell’s blurb on the cover: “Full of humor and heart”. I couldn’t agree more with her, she summed it perfectly up in just those 5 words. She was just so... pureheartedly evil in such a charming way! I instantly connected with this little lost girl and was so invested in this storyline. Up until it’s Netflix creation, Nimona has had a bumpy production history as it was previously developed for Fox, and later Disney starting in 2015. The project was originally produced by Blue Sky Studios, a part of the animation division of then 20th Century Fox.

Nimona is the New York Times bestselling graphic novel sensation from ND Stevenson, based on his beloved and critically acclaimed web comic. Kirkus says, “If you’re going to read one graphic novel this year, make it this one.”What do you mean, there are rules? Why would you follow the rules? Isn’t that the whole point of being a villain, that you don’t follow the rules?”
