HDMI Audio Return Channel (HDMI ARC) is a feature that allows soundbars and surround sound systems to use fewer cables. An HDMI cable (version 1.4 or higher) can be connected from your TV’s HDMI ARC port to an HDMI ARC port on a soundbar or surround sound receiver. This connection will route audio from another device connected to the TV to the soundbar. That could be a gaming console, Blu-ray player or media streaming device. This reduces the clutter of having audio cables trailing from the TV and other devices to the soundbar.

Operating system: 40-inch, 42-inch and 43-inch TVs didn't always come with a smart TV operating system in the past but they often do now. What you're looking for, ideally, is a well-maintained operating system like Roku TV, LG's webOS or Samsung's Tizen operating system. If you go with a TV that uses a proprietary operating system (basically an operating system exclusive to that one TV) you might have some serious issues down the road. Some models also offer additional features, such as Bluetooth connectivity for wireless audio connections, and smartphone and tablet connections. Is it worth buying a smart TV? A TV’s refresh rate is the number of times it refreshes the entire image each second. This count is measured in Hertz or Hz. A 60Hz TV will refresh an image 60 times, and a 120Hz TV will refresh an image 120 times. These terms refer more or less to the same thing – TV resolution. 4K screens offer roughly four times more pixels than HD screens, with 8.3 million pixels working across the screen. This means clearer, more accurate images. Here are some of the more common resolutions you'll find when looking for a new TV: Therefore, the higher the refresh rate, the smoother the moving image appears. By contrast, an exaggeratedly low refresh rate of 10Hz would make fast-paced content appear to jump, stutter and jolt. 50Hz - 60hz is going to be fine for most users.

Not sure how to choose what 40-inch, 42-inch or 43-inch TV is for you? While the options might feel overwhelming, it's worth considering what we think about when recommending TVs here on TechRadar. It's worth remembering that 40-inch screens, while once the pinnacle of high-end TV tech, are now considered a small size compared to many other TV displays. There’s more to contrast than that, including plenty of mathematics and specialist lighting measurements. CNET has a great guide on contrast and the pros and cons of relying on it as a metric for purchasing TVs. In this guide, we've also included several 42-inch and 43-inch TVs, which might give you a bit of extra screen space if the best 40-inch TVs seem a touch too small. What about 42-inch TVs and 43-inch TVs?For ease, we've included 40-inch TVs as well as the best 42-inch TVs and 43-inch TVs in this guide. You’ll even find a couple of the best gaming TVs below. If you want to plug in a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, LG's 43-inch C3 comes with HDMI 2.1 functionality for variable refresh rate and gaming in 4K at 120fps on all of its ports – it's basically a flagship TV in a smaller frame.

There’s also app-to-app pairing. This will allow you to control a TV app with your phone, but not the TV itself. For example: you can browse Netflix on your phone for The Witcher, and send it to the TV app. To make sure if a 40-inch TV is right for you, measure the space you'd like to put it in and consider how much your budget can stretch. This TV delivers excellent picture quality, with impressive levels of brightness, contrast and definition. It takes advantage of LG’s Alpha9 Gen6 chip, which is used for picture processing and HDR-improving features, like Expression Enhancer and OLED Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro. What this means is that your images look clearer, better and brighter. That's why we think it's a wonderful choice for movie lovers. And OLED is famously less bright than LED TVs in larger sets, but in 42-inch models, they're much more on the same level, so you don't get a real disadvantage there.

Google Chromecast is in-built with some smart TVs and can mirror content from both Android and iOS devices. Many smart TVs come with a feature named ‘Screen Mirror’, ‘Wireless Display’ or similar. This can pair and display a smartphone via a phone-installed app. This is great for viewing photos, videos or video chats. When you're considering a TV of this size, perhaps you'd better take a look at the best 43-inch smart TVs too; if you can find the space for something slightly larger we'd recommend it. But, if you like a 40-inch screen or have limited space, here are our recommendations for the best 40-inch smart TVs your money can buy. Best 40-inch smart TVs of 2023 at a glance
